Saving & Files

The Map File

An Infinihex map is a single file with an .ihex extension. It is a small, self-contained document that is easy to save, re-open, and back up. Tile art is referenced, not embedded, so the file stays small.

Maps from the older .hxmap format open directly and convert to .ihex.

Sharing a Map

The .ihex file records which tiles a map uses; it does not contain the tile images themselves. A map opened on another machine renders its tiles only if that machine already has the same tilesets, organized the same way, and registered in Settings → Libraries. Each tile is referenced by its path within its tileset folder.

Without the matching tilesets, the map still opens: its layout, colors, and coordinates are intact, and the tile hexes show as missing until the tilesets are present and relinked. See Tilesets & your art for how relinking works.

Infinihex does not bundle or transfer tile art with a map. Tilesets are licensed by their creators, and each user is responsible for the license and legal use of the tiles and artwork they use. Do not redistribute tile art you are not licensed to share.

Saving and Opening

  • Save (Cmd/Ctrl + S): a new map prompts for a name and location the first time.
  • Save As (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + S): save a copy under a new name.
  • Open (Cmd/Ctrl + O): or pick from the recent maps list on the start screen.
  • New (Cmd/Ctrl + N): choose a blank map or a generated one.

Unsaved Changes

Infinihex guards your work. If you start a new map, open another, or quit while you have unsaved changes, it asks first ("You have unsaved changes") so nothing is lost by accident. Reloading the app is disabled for the same reason.

Editing Map Dimensions

You can change a map's name, size, orientation, or hex size after creating it (Edit Map). One thing to know: shrinking the dimensions removes any hexes that fall outside the new bounds. Infinihex notes this so it isn't a surprise. Growing the map is always safe.
