Map Layout

The New Map dialog sets a map's size and hex geometry. The same settings are editable later in the Edit Map dialog.

  • New Map opens the dialog when creating a map.
  • Edit Map opens the dialog for the current map. Click the map dimensions shown at the top of the window.

Editing a map applies as a single undoable change. Reducing Width or Height removes hexes that fall outside the new bounds; the dialog confirms this before removing painted hexes.

Size

  • Width (cols) and Height (rows) set the map's dimensions in columns and rows.
  • Values are whole numbers. A fractional entry rounds to the nearest whole number.
  • Large dimensions are permitted. A warning appears before creating or resizing to a size that may affect performance.

Orientation

Orientation sets the hex shape and the direction of the grid.

  • Pointy-top: hexes have a point at top and bottom. Rows are horizontal.
  • Flat-top: hexes have a flat edge at top and bottom. Columns are vertical.

Orientation is a geometry setting. It changes how hexes are drawn and how coordinates map to columns and rows. Stored hexes are unaffected.

Grid Stagger

A hex grid offsets alternate columns or rows by half a hex. Grid stagger selects which line carries that offset.

  • Standard: the default offset. Odd columns (flat-top) or odd rows (pointy-top) are shifted.
  • Alternate: the opposite offset.

Use Alternate to match a reference or template map built with the opposite convention. Grid stagger is a display setting. It changes how coordinates map to columns and rows and how the grid is drawn. Stored hexes and painted art are unaffected, and the map re-renders immediately.

Ragged Edges

A rectangular map leaves the staggered edge hexes half a hex inside the straight border. Ragged edges draws those edge hexes instead, so the border follows the stagger. This matches printed reference maps that include the staggered edge hexes.

Each edge is independent:

  • Top
  • Bottom
  • Left
  • Right

The effect depends on orientation:

  • Flat-top: Top and Bottom add the staggered hexes along those edges. Left and Right extend the map by one straight column.
  • Pointy-top: Left and Right add the staggered hexes along those edges. Top and Bottom extend the map by one straight row.

Hexes added by a ragged edge are part of the map. They are paintable and are included in exports. Turning an edge off returns it to a straight border. A map with no ragged edges enabled is a plain rectangle.

To reproduce a reference map that numbers its staggered top hexes as a full row, enable the ragged edge and place the origin on those hexes with the Origin tool. See Coordinates & Grid.

Hex Size

Hex size (px) sets the drawn size of each hex in pixels. The minimum is 8. This affects the on-screen and exported scale, not the number of hexes.
